Bacon, Rosie, and Caverns: A Modern Take on Money Management
Back in the day when cash was king, many of us relied on a simple but effective money management tool called the envelope system. The idea, for those unfamiliar, was straightforward: after cashing your paycheck, you would allocate the money into envelopes designated for specific purposes—groceries, rent, entertainment, and so on. The brilliance of this system lay in its intentionality and psychological benefits. It provided a real-time, at-a-glance accounting method for variable categories like dining out and entertainment, ensuring you always knew how much money was left.
Another hidden advantage was the immediate association of spending with the pain of parting with physical cash, a discipline that has been lost in today’s buy-now-pay-later culture. Fast forward to 2024, and cash is all but obsolete. So, what now? How can we bring back the intentionality and psychological benefits of the envelope system in a cashless world?
One answer lies in a digital adaptation. A few years ago, we began testing a digital envelope system, inspired by the book Profit First for small business money management. This concept translates seamlessly into personal finances. By separating money into multiple small accounts with specific purposes, individuals can regain control over their spending in a way that’s both modern and practical.
A Digital System in Action
Yesterday, I met with a couple I’ve been coaching for seven months. Early on, during their third session, we introduced the digital envelope system. They embraced it immediately, and several months later, they describe it as a game changer.
When I asked what it meant for them, the husband shared a story about his “bacon-covered debit card.” This card holds their dining-out budget—a category that had been a frequent source of stress and hard to track in real time. With its own dedicated account, he can now check the balance anytime via his banking app. When I asked if the bacon imagery was because it symbolized a delicious meal, he surprised me by saying no. For him, the bacon symbolizes “bringing home the bacon”—a reminder of his hard work and the need to spend wisely. Ironically, he doesn’t even like bacon!
The wife’s card featured a picture of Rosie the Riveter. For her, it’s a daily reminder that every dollar she spends on eating out represents time and effort she’s traded for money.
Building Future Security
Another area of transformation for this couple was creating accounts for future expenses. They set aside money each month for annual costs, effectively creating a buffer that doubles as the first step toward a fully funded emergency fund.
The husband’s card for these savings features a serene image of a cavern—symbolizing the security of storing something valuable in a protected place. The wife’s card displays a constellation, representing navigation and preparation for the uncertainties of the future. These personal touches make their system meaningful and reinforce their financial goals daily.
Simple, Personalized Solutions
I love the creativity this family has brought to their financial journey. Their personalized approach to the digital envelope system has helped them make significant strides toward their goals while keeping money management simple and intentional. This is just one of the practical, customized strategies we use in coaching to help families take control of their finances with ease and confidence.
Whether you’re managing your money with digital tools or looking for creative ways to stay intentional, the key is finding what works for you and makes the process meaningful. After all, managing money isn’t just about numbers; it’s about aligning your finances with your values and goals.
